French Wine Regions

French wine can be described as a broad term which encompasses many different kinds of wine, distinguished on the basis of the region from which they are cultivated. The regions are Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Corsica, Ctes du Rhone, Languedoc-Roussillon, Loire Valley, Provence and languedoc roussillon South West. As each region differs from the other in terms of the kind of cultivation, the vineyards, the grapes used, the geographical location as well as the climatic condition, the wine from each area will have a different taste as compared to the wines from other areas.

Each area has its own specialty. Alsace wine is a sweet dry white wine. The Alsace wines include Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot blanc, Tokay pinot gris, Sylvaner and languedoc roussillon Crmant d'alsace. Bordeaux is the most important wine region, not only in France but all over the world. It has more than seven thousand chateaux. Some of its famous wines are Moulis, Listrac, Pomerol and languedoc roussillon Fronsac. Burgundy is famous for Chablis, Pommard, Corton, Volnay and languedoc roussillon Montrachet. The region of Corsica is known for Ajaccio and languedoc roussillon Patrimonio, which are subtle rose and languedoc roussillon dry white wines. Ctes du Rhone is known as the most diverse region of wine in France. Some of its famous wines are cte rtie, condrieu, hermitage, chteauneuf du pape, ctes du ventoux. The wine for which the area of Languedoc-Roussillin is famous for are Corbires, Coteaux du Languedoc, Ctes du Roussillon, Saint Chinian and languedoc roussillon Costires de Nimes.

Loire Valley is known for its white wines, in particular Muscadet, Anjou, Coteaux du Layon, Saumur, Touraine, Bourguel, Vouvray Pouilly Fum and languedoc roussillon Sancerre. Provence is known for its Bandol, Bellet and languedoc roussillon dry and languedoc roussillon fruity rose wine. The South West region of France is a traditional wine region. The wines from this region are Cahors, Juranon, Madiran, Bergerac and languedoc roussillon Monbazillac. A connoisseur knows that each wine has its own unique taste, aroma and languedoc roussillon flavor.

Languedoc roussillon - I Love French Wine and Food A Languedoc Roussillon Pinot Noir

If you are looking for fine French wine and languedoc roussillon food, consider the Languedoc-Roussillon region of south central France. You may find a bargain, and languedoc roussillon I hope that youll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a local red Pinot Noir.

Among the eleven wine-growing regions of France Languedoc-Roussillon ranks number four in total vineyard acreage. This area, which includes the Midi was traditionally known for generating immense amounts of rather dubious table wine called vin ordinaire. Recently, in part because of Australian winemakers, the region has started to produce a lot of fine wine. A few weeks ago a salesman offering free samples greeted me at my nearby wine store. While I hadnt planned to review yet another Languedoc-Roussillon wine so soon after the two others, I was particularly intrigued by this wines classification and languedoc roussillon its grape variety.

The wine bottle proudly displayed a sticker proclaiming its Gold ranking in a national contest for Vin de Pays (Country Wines) in 2006. You may recall from the initial article in this series (I Love French Wine and languedoc roussillon Food Launching a Series) that Vin de Pays is a relatively recent French classification for wines of promise that for one reason or another dont meet the stricter requirements of the presumably better classifications. Even though almost one third of French wine is classified as Vin de Pays we dont get too many of them here. I smelled a potential bargain.

The grape variety was Pinot Noir. I know of a relatively recent exhaustive list of Languedoc-Roussillon grape varieties comprising over thirty entries, some famous, others obscure. Pinot Noir was absent, surely not by oversight. Pinot Noir tends to be a cool-weather grape found in places such as Champagne and languedoc roussillon Burgundy in France, and languedoc roussillon Oregon in the United States. In our various article series we reviewed Pinot Noirs from non-traditional areas including Germany, Italy, and languedoc roussillon France (Alsace). Well see below how a Languedoc-Roussillon Pinot Noir stacks up.

Narbonne is a city of about fifty thousand that had been a major city in old Roman times. Sadly little of its Roman past remains. Youll have to be satisfied with modern sites such as the Fourteenth Century Cathdrale St-Just-et-St-Pasteur (St-Justs and languedoc roussillon St-Pasteurs Cathedral), the tallest cathedral in all of southern France. Nearby is the Palais des Archevques (Archbishops Palace) that houses art and languedoc roussillon archeology museums. If youre feeling ambitious climb the almost two hundred steps in the dungeon for a prisoners eye view of the surroundings. The sculpture museum in the former church Notre Dame de la Mourgui displays Roman and languedoc roussillon Gallic treasures of all sorts. The twenty two kilometer (fifteen mile) Robine Canal, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, flows into the much longer Canal du Midi (Midi Canal), similarly classified. Charles Trenet, a famous French singer and languedoc roussillon songwriter was born in Narbonne. Leon Blum, a three time French Prime Minister was born in Paris but elected to Parliament from Narbonne.

Before reviewing the Languedoc-Roussillon wine and languedoc roussillon imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and languedoc roussillon a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region. Start with Gambas (Prawns). For your second course savor Loup en Papillote (Sea Bass cooked in Foil). And as dessert indulge yourself with Pches la Minervoise (White Peaches with Muscat Wine and languedoc roussillon Raisins).

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and languedoc roussillon review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed Partiarche Pinot Noir Vin de Pays 2004 12% about $9

Lets start by quoting the marketing materials. Tasting Note: Pale ruby color; light cherry and languedoc roussillon spice aromas, sweet fresh cherry flavour, soft finish. Serving suggestion: Serve with cold roast beef.

My first meal consisted of cold beef spare ribs with cracked peppercorns, potato salad, and languedoc roussillon cucumber and languedoc roussillon onion salad. My first reaction was this is a real Pinot Noir at a great price. Its light acid did a great job of cutting the congealed fat. It was shorter and languedoc roussillon less complex than other Pinot Noirs that cost a lot, lot more.

The next meal was cold barbequed chicken with cucumber and languedoc roussillon onion salad, and languedoc roussillon potato salad. There was a lot of extract and languedoc roussillon quite a good length. I tasted tobacco and languedoc roussillon dark fruits.

The final meal involved grilled hamburgers with spicy Thai sauce, a cole slaw advertised as a health cole slaw whatever that means, and languedoc roussillon once again potato salad. In this case spicy meant really spicy. The sauce was too assertive; I had to remove most of it. While I like spices I want the wine to be there. Once that problem was solved the wine was fine. I tasted black cherries rather than the sweet cherries that I had been promised. I was not disappointed. I also tasted the underbrush and languedoc roussillon that didnt disappoint me either.

My first cheese pairing was with a local Asiago cheese that I prefer to the native Italian versions that I have tried. Perhaps in Italy The Pinot Noir was powerful with dark fruit. Then I went to a goats milk cheese, a Palet de Chevre from the Poitou Charentes region of central-western France. I might have guessed that the cheese was a Camembert rather than a goats milk cheese. Be that as it may, the wine became too acidic and languedoc roussillon lost its flavor. Then I paired the Pinot Noir with a nutty tasting Swiss Gruyere. At first the same phenomenon occurred, but later became less pronounced. I thought that perhaps the wine was starting to decline, but I finished the bottle on its own and languedoc roussillon the fruit came back in force.

Final verdict. We have a winner. We have a bargain. The two are related. At twice the price I wouldnt bother. But at the present price Ill be coming back. And Ill be looking for another Vin de Pays to try soon.

Languedoc roussillon - World Tour Of My Favorite Wine

A good Merlot warms the heart, the ambiance and languedoc roussillon the cheeks. Merlot is extremely popular amongst red wines. It is an easy wine to drink and languedoc roussillon marries well with hearty dishes, especially so in winter. A wine that originated in France, like so many, now Merlot is produced with great success in other parts of the world as well, such as the United States, Chile and languedoc roussillon Australia. My personal goal is finding great Merlots from a variety of countries, at a great price.

The United States

Merlots from the Napa Valley and languedoc roussillon Sonoma Valley in the wine region of California tend to be especially good choices amongst American Merlots. Merlot is a warm-weather grape, and languedoc roussillon a specialty of these regions. A recent discovery I made amongst Sonoma Valley Merlots is Angeline 2002 for under $15. Two sure bets in Napa Valley Merlots are Sterling Vintner's Collection, which range in price from $15 to $30 and languedoc roussillon Edgewood, which is usually under $20.

Chile

Chile also produces some wonderful Merlots. My personal great price for a great bottle from this country is Casillero del Diablo, which is usually found easily for under $10. This wine comes with a great story. In order to dissuade workers from partaking of the wines produced by his vineyard, one owner dubbed his cellar "Casillero del Diablo" or Cellar of the Devil. Amazingly, it kept the workers from going there and languedoc roussillon helping themselves.

France

My French Merlot favorites tend to come from Pays d'Oc, even though, the "pays" or country wines tend to have a reputation as being inferior to those from the A.O.C. or regulated wine regions. Pays d'Oc wines come from the Languedoc-Roussillon area in the south of France. This area specializes in varietal wines, or wines produced from only one specific grape, of which there has been an increasing demand. One surprisingly good Merlot from this area, considering it comes in a completely recyclable, environmentally friendly box, is called French Rabbit and languedoc roussillon retails for about $10. Its packaging is either a love-it or hate-it type of thing. I haven't decided where I stand on it yet, but I definitely like what is inside it.

Australia

Australia's Little Penguin Merlot is another of those under $10 choices that is surprisingly good. The entire Little Penguin line has gotten good ratings for such a new line of products. It certainly will not hold up favorably in comparison to the Sterling Vintner's Collection or Edgewood from Napa Valley, however as an everyday Merlot to enjoy, this one is pretty good.

The key to enjoying different types of Merlot is doing some research, asking questions, reading ratings, doing a little taste testing before buying and languedoc roussillon being open to new experiences. Even if you have always enjoyed a wine from a certain region and languedoc roussillon tend to always buy wines from there, an occasional foray into another part of the same country or even into another country altogether will liven up your Merlot drinking. So go for it next time you are looking for a new wine and languedoc roussillon see how many continents you can enjoy.

Languedoc roussillon - France Better Than Spain Safer Than Eastern Europe

France is a better place to invest in than Spain and languedoc roussillon less risky than eastern European countries, according to one expert. s

Trisha Mason, managing director of property firm VEF, said that the Spanish market had "fallen flat on its face" and languedoc roussillon that more people should look to buying French property instead.

She added that while it was true that the French property market may not match the capital growth seen in places such as Bulgaria, it is certainly a safer choice than any of these countries.

Investors take advantage of 'mature economy'

"France is good because it's a mature economy, it's a safe property market but it's not going to produce the capital growth that some eastern countries do," said Ms Mason.

"[France is] a safe choice, but it's more interesting this month than it was last month."

She added that the French economy was set to boom under the new president Nicolas Sarkozy and languedoc roussillon that there was plenty of time for investor to cash in before house prices start rising.

Property market gets lively with Sarkozy

The property market is predicted to get "livelier" with the arrival of the politician, who is said to be intending to lower inheritance tax, and languedoc roussillon make mortgages more tax efficient.

Another bonus Mr Sarkozy brings with him is the pledge to cut the red tape surrounding buying property and languedoc roussillon investing in France. Although the Sarkozy effect could take some time to manifest itself, and languedoc roussillon there is likely to be some resistance from the Unions, it could be a good time to start looking! We recommend the Languedoc-Roussillon for property investment.

How To Find The Perfect Holiday Villa In The Languedoc, France

Travel to Catalonia, and languedoc roussillon discover the best of the Languedoc region of France.

I have travelled extensively on holiday to Europe and languedoc roussillon to many other countries. I must share with you my favourite place to visit in the world, it is French Catalonia.

Languages spoken commonly are French, Spanish and languedoc roussillon also Catalan(which is now taught to children in schools in both France and languedoc roussillon Spain)

The Catalan region is known as Catalonia in France and languedoc roussillon Catalua in Spain. This diverse region encompasses the Pyrenees Mountains, beaches of the Mediterranean, many vineyards in the Languedoc, excellent walking and languedoc roussillon cycling routes. Cycling is a passion for the French and languedoc roussillon many holiday makers hire a bike whilst on their vacation, many villas come equipped with their own bikes.

Property in the Languedoc is of a high standard and languedoc roussillon if, like me, you prefer to stay in self-catering accommodation then there is a huge range of apartments, villa and languedoc roussillon gite to rent. The property on offer is diverse from a large villa to a small gite. Apartments are many located in the cities such as Perpignan and languedoc roussillon Girona (or Gerona as it is sometimes spelt)

The climate affords sun for most of the year, on average over 300 days a year. This makes the area an excellent base for skiing in the Pyrenees, fishing, golf or just relaxing on sun drenched beaches or by your villa pool.

The main cities are famous throughout Europe and languedoc roussillon the world, Barcelona in Spain, and languedoc roussillon Perpignan in the Languedoc, France. The culture of this vibrant place, with its world class art galleries and languedoc roussillon museums it is worth a visit. Picasso or Dali who frequented this area and languedoc roussillon produced some master pieces whilst staying here. Many artists have travelled and languedoc roussillon made their homes in this area, and languedoc roussillon there is a vibrant artistic community thriving today.

I suggest when you plan a vacation to this area you select a base near to the border so that you can experience the best of both countries and languedoc roussillon the unique hospitality of the proud Catalan people. There is a plethora of accommodation available to suit all needs, from a small city apartment, a French gite or a Spanish Villa, larger property mostly comes with a swimming pool. You can also swim on the clean beaches.

I have now purchased a property in the Languedoc and languedoc roussillon have visited on holiday over 20 times. I am an active person and languedoc roussillon am never bored of travel around this dynamic and languedoc roussillon interesting area. I never fail to be fascinated with the amount of things to do on my days out, whilst on vacation relaxing at my villa. My experience is also shared by the growing number of holiday homeowners who have lodgings to rent in this part of France and languedoc roussillon Spain.

My friends, who have stayed at my villa on holiday, have been amazed at who relaxed and languedoc roussillon friendly the locals are. The Languedoc has one of the longest life expectancy rates in the Europe.

Another reason to visit is the excellent wine. The Languedoc is the most prolific wine making area in France. A great idea is to rent a bike, or hire a villa with a bike and languedoc roussillon cycle around the vineyards sampling wine. French food is something to be sampled at leisure, a minimum of 2 hours from 12-2pm is taken everyday when work colleagues, family and languedoc roussillon friends all sit together eat, chat and languedoc roussillon enjoy.

If you want to holiday in Europe visit the Catalan region and languedoc roussillon stay in Languedoc or Spain, you wont be disappointed.

Visit Aude For A Beautiful French Holiday

The Aude is one of the most beautiful areas of France, located in the picturesque Southern region of Languedoc Roussillion.

The Languedoc Roussillon region lies just south of Toulouse in Southern France. Its an area of truly outstanding beauty. Within the regions boundaries there are a wealth of activities to enjoy and languedoc roussillon places to visit, including Carcassonne, Perpignan and languedoc roussillon the capital Montpellier.

Aude has a population of around three hundred thousand people and languedoc roussillon represents close to fifteen percent of the population of Languedoc.

If you're looking for somewhere in the South of France to spend a peaceful and languedoc roussillon relaxed vacation, Aude is the truly idyllic place you've been looking for. Offering easy access to the Mediterranean coast and languedoc roussillon to the Pyrenean mountains, you have the choice between peace and languedoc roussillon tranquillity, and languedoc roussillon for the more energetic, skiing is an option or why not try a spot of sun bathing by the Med. You really are spoilt for choice.

The Aude region is famous for "Les Chateaux Du Pays Cathare" with its local castles, towns and languedoc roussillon villages dating back well over 800 years. Historic towns such as Revel, Mirepoix, Foix, Fanjeaux, Limoux and languedoc roussillon Castres are all well worth a visit, whilst a look round the noted wine regions of the area' Fitou, Corbieres, and languedoc roussillon Minervois are a must, along with of course a spot of wine tasting.

The market town of Castelnaudary is also worth putting on your list of places to visit. The town is famous for its traditional dish known as Cassoulet, which is served in almost every restaurant in town. English TV Chef Rick Stein, visited Castelnaudary when he travelled along the Canal du Midi exploring the local cuisine of the area, he fell in love with the simplicity of Cassoulet.

Two beautiful lakes of note, Lac de la Ganguise and languedoc roussillon the Lac de St Ferreol both have great beaches providing activities for all ages, including walking, sailing and languedoc roussillon mini-golf. 18 Hole courses can be found in Carcassonne, Mazamet and languedoc roussillon near Toulouse.

Mazamet is close to the Black Mountains (La Montagne Noire) to the north east, whilst the Pyrenees are about an hour to the south. Both regions provide the opportunity to take walks of varying degrees of difficulty and languedoc roussillon also offer great routes for the cycling enthusiast.

The Pyrenees boast a number of ski resorts which during the winter months offer great skiing for all levels, whilst Axe le Therme also caters for all levels of skiers and languedoc roussillon is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year.

Aude really does have something for every one looking to enjoy a beautiful holiday in France. Whether you're looking for peaceful tranquility or the thrill of the ski slopes, horse riding or cycling, or you just want to sample some great food or wine tasting, you'll never be short of things to try in Aude.
